Published in 1572, The Lusíadas is considered the greatest epic poem of the Portuguese language. In it, Camoes tell Portugal’s conquers, the glories of its navigators, the king of ancient times...... The central action is the discovery of the maritime path to India by Vasco da Gama, describing many episodes of Portugal history, which, in Camoes time was a world power due to the exploration, via sea, of new commercial routes. Throughout the narrative, divine Greek-roman mythological interventions are also narrated in the heroes’ actions, in a sequence of bellicose, mythological, historic and symbolic episodes.
